Back to Square One

Back to Square One continues Reinike's exploration of the Arch Series through a composition of symbols centered on choice, learning, and renewal.

A feather quill dipped in ink rests on the checkerboard floor. In Reinike's visual vocabulary, the checkerboard represents the gameboard of life, with each square marking a decision and each move shaping the path ahead.

The quill rests on the first square, representing the written word as the beginning of wisdom. Learning comes from studying the written word; wisdom comes from learning. The freshly dipped quill suggests readiness—to record, to learn, and to begin again.

The checkerboard extends to a red interior chamber. Within the red back wall, a whisper of a figure appears beside an arched window that reveals palm trees, a winding path, distant mountains, and blue sky. The path visually extends the room and suggests the possibility of moving forward. Together, the quill, checkerboard, arch, and distant landscape create a sense of beginning and progression.
