Picket Fence

In Picket Fence, one of Akers' "Shelter Paintings," a simple house becomes a metaphor for the effects of time and change on neglected areas. A worn cottage dominates the scene, the darkness in its windows reflecting sparks of light from outside. The foreground features a picket fence that subtly shifts from transparency to shadow, revealing the home through wide gaps in the barrier. The roof of the cottage blends into the sky and trees, becoming one with the natural environment. A bold, orange door, however, asserts itself as a touch of modernity, raising questions about the home's original architectural intent and harmony with neighboring dwellings.
