Caravan

Henry Callahan's Caravan is a striking juxtaposition of dark and light. The black and deep gray background on the left creates a dramatic contrast with the numerous white and dark specks on the remainder of the canvas.

Elongated shapes in grays and whites with accents of reds, and hints of yellows and greens are arranged vertically within the space, imparting a feeling of a collective journey or procession.

The gestural and indistinct nature of these forms is typical of Callahan's style of Abstract Expressionism.
