Gala is composed of horizontal bands in tones of a blue-gray, white, golden tans, and black that move rhythmically across the canvas. The long central bands are interrupted at the edges by shorter opposing segments, creating a measured counterpoint that defines the composition. Layers of paint build a textured surface where structure and spontaneity coexist, and subtle shifts in tone and edge establish a measured rhythm across the surface.
In this work, Callahan continues his examination of the relationships between color and form, allowing structure itself to become the source of expression.
